There is a demography of players who do not necessarily seek easily sought difficulties which result in pleasurable well-being or scenarios that are easy to digest and understand. These are people who, for one reason or another, find themselves looking for the most brutal experiences that games can offer, and they have been around since the start of Battletoads on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The demographics were almost entirely forgotten for decades until a relatively unknown studio brought out a relatively small title on February 5, 2009. Prepare To Die, Masochists: Demon’s Souls Is Being Remade Entirely For PlayStation 5
Called Demon’s Souls, it was From Software’s first foray into the saga and genre that now spread internationally under the name of Dark Souls, where enemies punished while being righteous and where progress were obtained. Every inch of progress in this franchise is marked with blood, sweat and tears, as well as a deeper understanding of the mechanics that the game offers the player, allowing for this fantastic moment where everything clicks and you manage to defeat another grotesque monstrosity .
The series has become so popular that independent games have started to take over from the genre, introducing endurance indicators and punitive battles where players should prove their prowess to progress. Admittedly, the series became a little more watered down as it continued, as FromSoft wanted to ensure that more players could enter it, although the tradition still consists of bizarre readings and puzzle pieces history that it is up to the user to understand.
